Acquiring art is not about matching your decor.
Working in a tourist area, our gallery often hears the comment, "I love this painting but it doesn't match our decor". The area is an up and coming artists' community and the buying of art is more about wall decor for the new homes and condos being purchased. They have yet to learn the essence of buying art for the art itself.
Art is created to inspire you, make a statement or simply to be enjoyed. When buying a piece of art for your home, matching the decor should not be the first priority. Actually, I will go one step further and suggest it should not be considered at all.
Buying art , no matter what level of work or what price, is about the feeling you get when viewing it. It is an investment that expresses you. It is a financial investment that is coupled with your heart. It is a financial investment that represents history or society in its current stage.
Juxtapositioning traditional art in modern spaces or modern art in traditional spaces can make your room spectacular. It gets people to take notice. You want the art to strike up the conversation.
Next time you want to acquire art, go with your heart. Do not think about the size of your space, the colour of your walls or the type of furnishings. Purchase the art that speaks to you. When you get home, you will find spot that will highlight the art. If you have difficulty finding the 'right place', hire an art consultant or interior designer. They will suggest ideas you never even thought of such as a bright coloured vignette as shown below which can become the 'matched' decor you desire.
Remember, if you see a piece of art that moves you or that you simply cannot get out of your head, you know it is a good investment for you.
